Barcelona

At the end of February 2019, the premises of Carrer Sant Pere Mitja, 65 were awarded to us. After almost a month of adapting it dressing it with new furniture and completing it with the exhibition of our works, we held a small opening party. We invited all those people who had contributed to making Tudanzas what it is today and in the end we got together a nice group. We concluded that evening with the creation of a joint work, and using a straw as instrument, each guest left their mark on the canvas. Barcelona is a reflection of a night, a triumph, the work we do and the people who make it possible.

The common thread of this sequence of laboratories is that of the menstruating body and its evolution as a humiliated, hidden and oppressed body by a patriarchal culture and a capitalist system, capable of transforming a weakness into a commercial opportunity. As a matter of the contingent, it is of sustainable coherence to go through and test, throughout the sessions, different disciplines, both pedagogical and artistic, whose subject is liberation and artistic-social transformation; as the base action structure of the workshops. Always maintaining the bases of the methodology tailored to the practice of the tudanzas creation laboratories.

This workshop is framed, to a large extent, within the methodology of the Theater of the Oppressed. This theatrical discipline was created by the playwright Augusto Boal during the 1960s, constituting one of the great contributions of the twentieth century in both the scenic and pedagogical artistic fields.

Augusto Boal, inspired by the literature of Paulo Freire (Baraúna, Motos, 2010) develops his methodology based on a clear premise: theater and art constitute a useful and efficient weapon of liberation (Boal, 1974, P. 132), Precisely for this reason said artistic discipline turns out to be hegemonized by the upper classes. Resulting in the «oppressed» lower middle class under an elitist art reproducing inequalities. Ultimately, then, Boal seeks, through what he calls theatrical laboratories, the means of liberation from the aesthetic ties of the theater. Trying to offer the subject the freedom to create a new aesthetic and, ultimately, to be able to build a cultural democracy.

In a synthesizing way, we can say that the Theater of the Oppressed is based on ethics and solidarity; in the community and participatory; and in the humanization of humanity. In his practice he tries to analyze the past in present time and jointly invent the desired future (Boal, 1992, P. 14).

The Theater of the Oppressed, on the margins of a hypothetical-deductive method, concludes: we are all artists - art is a means of liberation - making use of theater and art makes the figure of «the oppressed» possess a means of democracy and transformation of the social.

Dona

Dona is the result of the day of March 8, International Women's Day. We decided to work on the issue of feminism and women through the closest but at the same time most complicated feeling: gratitude. With a simple choreography, we gesture teamwork, appreciating the work of others and complementary with respect. Through purple colors, representative of this day, the final work does not distinguish individual interventions but rather reflects a single object, solid and fluid at the same time.

It is necessary to contextualize menstruation in the temporality of the oldest Laboratory participants, in order to develop sessions that attend and refer to the experiences around the menstruating body of each of the participants.
The origin of the compress is located during World War i, even if it was not until the 1920s that they began to be commercialized (Álvarez, 2017). But the reality is that the compress, as we know it today, was invented during the 70's. Before that decade, the material used to make this product was textiles. This is why, instead of being disposable, the pads were reusable.
The first session of the “Rojo Taboo” Creation Laboratory consisted of an exchange of opinions and experiences of the participants about menstruation. During the conversation, it came out repeatedly, by the elderly participants, how uncomfortable and violent it was to spread the cloth compress in full view of the neighbors. Exposing something extremely taboo at the social level, which was part of their privacy, in the public sphere in view of the opinion of anyone facilitated, at that time, the criminalization of the menstrual body and the desire to hide it on the part of women (Tarzibachi, 2017). We can understand hanging a work of art that symbolizes the dirty menstrual blood panties as a metaphor for the breaking of the taboo around this theme, and as showing in the public sphere the reality of a woman during her days of menstrual bleeding, in the context of the older participants, it has contributed to the evolution of the acceptance of the female body as a menstruating body.
